The Heart of The Theatre: Shining A Spotlight on Our Volunteers
By: Jess Spagnolo [Kawartha Lakes Weekly Feature]
At our theatre, the true heartbeat isn’t just onstage, it’s in the volunteers who welcome guests, guide them, and bring warmth to every show. Few understand their impact better than Vangi Patton, Assistant Manager and Volunteer organizer. We sat down with her to explore what truly makes volunteers “the heart of the theatre.”
What does “the heart of the theatre” mean to you, and how do volunteers embody that?
To me, “the heart of the theatre” refers to the people who give life to everything that happens within our walls. A theatre can have beautiful lights, great shows, and talented performers, but without the people who bring warmth, welcome, and genuine care to each performance, it simply doesn’t beat the same way. Our volunteers embody that completely. They are the first faces our patrons see, the last people to say goodnight, and the steady presence that ensures every audience member feels valued. They show up with positivity, generosity, and a willingness to help wherever needed. Their spirit is what makes the theatre feel alive.
Is there a particular moment when you felt especially proud of the volunteer team?
There isn’t one specific event that stands above the rest. Instead, there have been occasions that were far from the average show night—; times when unexpected challenges arose or situations required extra attention. In every one of those moments, the volunteers have stepped up without hesitation. They communicate beautifully, support one another, and ensure patrons are cared for with calm professionalism. Watching them rise to meet those situations has filled me with pride again and again.
What are some things volunteers do to keep the theatre running smoothly?
Volunteers handle an incredible range of responsibilities—; ushering, greeting patrons, managing tickets, organizing and running the 50/50, assisting with accessibility needs, supporting concessions, and keeping the lobby and auditorium welcoming and orderly. They answer questions, solve problems before anyone else even notices them, and bring warmth and professionalism to every interaction. Often, the things they quietly do behind the scenes are exactly what keep the theatre operating so smoothly.
What inspires you most about leading the volunteer team?
I am constantly inspired by their generosity and commitment. Every volunteer chooses to give their time simply because they care about the theatre, the community, and the experience we offer to audiences. Leading a team of people who genuinely enjoy helping others, and who treat every show as an opportunity to make someone’s night special—, is a privilege. Their dedication inspires and motivates me every day.
If you had to describe the volunteer team in three words, what would they be and why?
Dedicated, Welcoming, and Heartfelt.
- Dedicated because they show up consistently, prepared, and ready to give their best.
- Welcoming because they create the first impression patrons feel the moment they walk in the door.
- Heartfelt because everything they do— (from the smallest task to the biggest responsibility—) is done with kindness, sincerity, and genuine care for the people around
them.
