A CHRISTMAS STORY
THE MUSICAL
Book by Joseph Robinette,
Music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The FLATO Academy Theatre’s Annual Fall Musical returns with another exciting, entertaining, fun for the whole family event that you won’t want to miss! Made up of a cast of exceptional local talent, directed by amazing local talent with live music provided by incredible local talent this will be the hilight of the Christmas season in the City of Kawartha Lakes!
Based on the beloved 1983 film, A Christmas Story: The Musical follows young Ralphie Parker (Jace Jolicoeur) in 1940s Indiana as he dreams of the perfect Christmas gift: an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.
Narrated through the voice of Jean (Tim Brown), we step back to one unforgettable Christmas with Ralphie. Despite constant warnings from adults that “You’ll shoot your eye out,” Ralphie schemes to convince his parents, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself that this BB gun is the ultimate gift.
Meanwhile, the Parker family faces its own holiday adventures: Ralphie’s father, “The Old Man,” (Matt Avery) wins a mysterious “major award” in the form of a tacky leg lamp that horrifies Ralphie’s mother (Tara Restrepo); Ralphie’s little brother Randy (Jude Collver) struggles to face the winter cold; and school bullies, triple-dog dares, and a disastrous visit to the department store Santa add to the chaos.
The story unfolds through a mix of humor, warmth, and nostalgia, with lively songs and big musical numbers highlighting Ralphie’s vivid imagination—turning his daydreams of cowboy heroics, dazzling gifts, and epic triumphs into full-blown showstoppers.
In the end, Ralphie discovers that Christmas is about more than just the gift you want most—it’s about family, tradition, and the magic of the holiday season.
Packed with humor, heart, and high-spirited songs backed by a live orchestra pit with local talented musicians, this musical reminds us of the joy and chaos of the holiday season.
